Powerful but noisy By Arlo Leach I have a home office in an attic that's sun-baked in the summer and drafty in the winter, and this powerful heater/air conditioner can quickly bring the space to a comfortable temperature year-round.Unfortunately, the unit is quite loud. The AC fan (which runs continuously even when the compressor is off) is so loud I have to turn it off when making a phone call. And the heater (which turns off completely when not in a heating cycle) makes such a jarring noise when it comes on that I jump out of my seat every time. The AC noise wouldn't be a problem if it were further from my desk, but if I had this in a bedroom there's no way I'd be able to sleep with that heater noise.Also, despite the unit being marketed as not needing a water tank or drain for air conditioning, it does occasionally leak water onto the floor. Placing a cookie sheet or an improvised aluminum foil pan underneath is an easy solution, but it took me a while to notice what was happening.Despite these concerns, I'd buy the same unit again due to its environmental features. The dual-hose design makes it more efficient, and the coolant doesn't harm the ozone layer. By tj I usually don't write reviews on products, but this one deserved a good one. We just purchased this for my son's apartment which only has evaporative cooling (worthless in the desert during the monsoon). His place is a loft in an old brick warehouse - poorly insulted, high ceilings. It was easy to install by venting through an old casement window (we used the attachments plus some foamboard and duct tape to seal an irregular opening). We all expected it to be loud but were very pleasantly surprised by how quietly it ran at full fan speed with the compressor on. Within 20 minutes the upstairs of the loft - an area over 600 sq. ft. - was much cooler in the area near the unit and noticebly cooler farther away. I expect it to do very well after running overnight. It's going to be up to 107 degrees and humid this week (humid for us is over 40%) so we'll see how it can deal with the worst that Tucson has to offer. Will update the review later this week (if I remember) but expect good performance based on what we've experienced so far.Also, with Prime, we ordered this yesterday and for $3.99 had it delivered overnight. It came from Washington State and arrived at 3pm... all 110 pounds of it. Rated up to 500 sf but it hold it own in keeping a larger area fairly cool, upper 70's but a lot better then the 110+ out side and the 90+ was the coolest that the swamp cooler could do during the day in my elderly fathers home. Very easy to operate as my father does not do electronics or computers very well. There will be a extra bonus now that this has a heater on it for the winter will be able to get rid of the small costly space heaters that he likes to use. This is a great buy for your money. All you need to install this product is a screwdriver; the window kit is easy to install and there is no permanent installation so that it can be moved to another window. Now it has come to a point where portable units have moved beyond your functional clunky beige contraption to something that has been designed to subtly blend into the surroundings. After deciding between this and a Delonghi (yes, I've finally arrived now that I can afford high-end appliances!) I decided to go with the more compact unit that was at a more affordable price point. I've been using this for about a month now and have been completely satisfied with nearly all aspects. One little gripe that I have, is the absence of handles on the side, it definitely is heavy too. It does however churn out very very cold air, look extremely slick and is a snap to use. The remote control has a myriad of functions that I will eventually use one day but for now, I just need the icey relief from a hot spring day. 21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Nicely designed and works like a champ. By Luke Raft I absolutely adore the low profile design of this unit. It is very unobtrusive and compact. Don't let that fool you though, it cools like nothing else. The price and brand are definitely on the high end but so far it's earned every bit of it in my books. Here's a little trick that I use that actually saves me a small fortune in utility bills. I live and work in my apartment. I purchased 3 extra sets of window kits and basically installed them in the bedroom, study/den, living room and dining room windows. Once I wake up, all I do is unhook the unit, pull it to the next room with that very handy hidden pull cord and presto, hook it up and presto I'm all set for the next several hrs. Rinse and repeat as needed. Portable units are a great way to save over central air and this Whynter unit makes it very easy to do so. Not good for very humid weather By Confused I ordered this unit thinking it was what I wanted for my upstairs bedroom because I wouldn't have to give up one of the two windows and then could move it to the extra room while sewing. I live in MA and it worked fine the end of June, beginning of July. It cooled the room in no time at all. We then had a cold spell and didn't use it til August when it became brutally humid. I woke up after 2 hours of use and it shut itself down. Found out that the reservoir filled up. I drained it (which isn't easy since the drainage hole is very close to the floor) it turned on by itself and then in 2 more hours did the same thing. I contacted the company.This is what they said: "Thank you for your purchase of the Whynter SNO ARC-13W portable air conditioner. Can you please put a pan under the drain plug of the air conditioner and remove the drain plug at the back of the unit? Once all water is drained out, the air conditioner should come on automatically.Please make sure that the exhaust hose is not blocked or bent and able to vent the hot air with moisture to the outside. It is common that the unit is not able to exhaust the moisture collected if your room temperature is low or if the outside is raining or extremely humid. Also, sometimes when you first start running an air conditioner, the self evaporating system may not function in full capacity.Also, you may want to set up the air conditioner to have continuous drainage by inserting a drain hose to the drain spout if you live in a humid location."In order to put a pan under it, I had to elevate it on blocks. The pan filled up every three hours so I had to set my alarm to empty the pan.The company offered a drainage hose but because it doesn't have the capability of pushing out the water, I would have

Kumar The fan is a very basic model.Pros- Easy to install and comes with a side panel to block the window opening- Cheap- Can be used for venting as well as getting air inCons- A little noisy for the air that it pushes through (relatively low CFM for the noise level)- Twin fans cannot be controlled independently- Venting or getting air in is controlled manually by reversing the fan. 47 of 49 people found the following review helpful. Not bad for a $16.60 fan! By Gary H I bought this fan at Walmart. In fact, I bought two window fans because I didn't think this fan would be worthy. I got home that night around 11:45pm. It was 81 degrees in the house, but outside it was nice and cool. I set it up and it really pulled the cold air in. The temp dropped to 73 with the fan on. Nice.My windows are new casement type windows and this one fits perfectly. It has a extension that will make it longer and at the other end, there is a pull out extension that will make it even longer.I'm returing the other one which is a HAWF2026 - it just doesn't have the extra extension and the adjustable one (doesn't have any of them).I really wished they put a more powerful motor in these, but for the price it's not bad. If there is a more powerful one I'll buy it. By Arachkid I ordered this unit from Amazon during the two week plus heat wave here in southern California when it remained at over 110 degrees during the day and 85 degrees at night. During this time our old 10,000 BTU Sears unit died and you couldn't buy, beg, borrow or steal a suitable replacement in SoCal. When we received this Frigidaire, I immediately installed it and ran it nonstop for almost two weeks. The installation was easy and the Frigidaire easily outperformed the Sears on its best day. The continually variable fan speed which resets as needed during the "auto cool" setting is really effective at cooling a room.Probably the best feature of this a/c, besides its outstanding performance, is its compact size. We live in an ancient house and only have 21 3/8 inches of window opening space. The Frigidaire is only 19 1/8 inches wide, an inch less than the 10,000 BTU Sears a/c it replaced. I am aware that there are "casement" style a/c units available for narrow window openings. Unfortunately, after extensive investigation of these units, it seems that they are less fully featured than the non casement a/c units.If this Frigidaire is ever available on Amazon again, I'll buy a spare. It is compact and fits easily in most standard windows. It's electronic controls offer many refinements/conveniences which your old a/c does not. It is also much more efficient than your old a/c, and the electronic controls make operating it efficiently simple and straight-forward. It is meant to cool 650+ sq. ft. It is easily up to that task, and in fact does a pretty good job of keeping my entire 1300+ sq. ft. house comfortable. As such, it is not a good choice as a bedroom unit, unless you have an enormous bedroom. Although it is no noisier than competitive units of the same capacity, the compressor and blower do produce some noise and you would not want this unit 6 feet from your ear when trying to sleep at night. That said, I have it in a hall window about 10 feet from my 3 bedrooms, and the noise level is very reasonable and acceptable. The blower is electronic and continuously adjustable, which helps quite a bit.The construction of this unit is no less robust than most other modern a/c's, with the possible exception of the top-end brands costing twice as much. The case is all metal. The vents and vent covers are plastic and need to be handled with normal care, but they are not especially delicate. The switches seem robust. All the functions can be very conveniently controlled via remote. The remote "beep" which confirms operation is not particularly loud and not being able to turn it off is not a problem. The vents offer slightly less control of the airflow than the unit this replaced, but the difference is minor and of no real consequence.The window mounting is achieved with conventional accordion "wings" which are easily installed, and if need be, replaced. Again, they are no less robust than competitive units and if used with normal care and common sense, will likely hold up as well as any of this type of equipment does. There are a/c's which are designed to use a "sleeve" mount, which in my opinion is more of a pain than a convenience.This unit is inexpensive in comparison to the competition, and is just as well constructed as most and has the same features. It cost me about 20% less than the next lowest priced unit (a Kenmore) and 25%+ less than anything I could find at the big-box home-repair stores. I cannot say if it will live as long; I'll report

Ghis I got this to supplement the window unit I've been using for years and ended up just completely replacing the window unit. Very robotic design, it stands around 3ft tall and is in fact rather slim once you take it out of the packaging. Came with all the necessary accessories to get it running immediately. Hooking it up and putting the hot air vent where my window A/C used to be was extremely straightforward. We usually power it up after my daughter returns from pre-school and set the temperature to around 74F. It usually shuts off at about 2am when the room and outside temps are nice and comfortable. The air is extremely cold around the unit and gets a good sized room down to a nice temp really fast. It seems very quiet during the day with all the other sounds and my daughter has slept like a baby ever since we got it. I does emit a low hum when it's cooling but otherwise the fan sound is not noticeable to me. You can turn it on high for a few minutes but after awhile, that's overkill. It does a great job on a low fan setting once the room is almost at the temp you want it at. I really like the idea of not having to use central air like in our old apartment. I think over time the utility savings will easily cover the cost of the unit. The best part is I can bring it with us if we ever move. It's worked excellently for a couple of weeks now and I may just end up getting another for our own room. I agree with the negative reviews about it being noisy, but I have it in my bedroom and I got used to it after 2 nights. I sleep through it now. The LED is also very bright, but not so much that it keeps me awake. I took off a star because of the useless window mount. The hoses weren't long enough for it to reach my window, so I went to Home Depot to build a rig. Replacement hoses are EXPENSIVE, so I didn't buy them. The screws are very short and pop right out of the cheap plastic mount, so I'm using tape to hold them in place. I have since moved and now have casement windows, so I'm in the process of building a new mount in which I will screw the hoses directly into a piece of plexiglass which will sit in the window. I've read that this will work fine, so I'm not concerned about it. One of the negative reviews I read about this unit is that it failed to cool the space. It is designed to cool roughly 600 square feet (a small apartment) so it works fine for my place. I also use a fan to push the cool air into the other room. I like the look of the unit, as well as the fact that it can be a fan or a dehumidifier. I bought plastic tubing for the water collection tank, but it has yet to produce a single drop. Excellent AC even in Florida By Byron Goss I have a canopy tent and use it often during the summers here in Florida. I got this unit to provide a bit of repost to the heat/humitity and it did a wonderful job. What caught my eye about this product was the low amp/voltage use. I connected a amp/volt monitor and discovered it pulled about 9.73 amps, a little lower than the 10.5 I saw in the user manual. I connect a drain tube, so I can't comment on how quickly the water repository fills up. I do say it is the coldest portable AC unit I have ever used. Defiantly a good buy.
